Industry First Smart Filament LED Light Bulb Wins Residential SSL Lamp and Luminaire Design Category

Wilmington, Mass. – The Sapphire Awards Gala Dinner held last month celebrated the most innovative companies in the solid state lighting (SSL) industry by naming the fourth annual LEDs Magazine Sapphire Award winners. The event, held in conjunction with Strategies in Light, The LED Show, and Lightspace California in Anaheim, CA, aboard the RMS Queen Mary honored the enabling technologies and elegance-of-design in finished lighting products in the industry. Lighting leader LEDVANCE, maker of SYLVANIA general lighting products in North America, received a Sapphire Award in the Residential SSL Lamp and Luminaire Design category for its HomeKit™-enabled SYLVANIA SMART+™ Soft White A19 Filament LED Bulb.
“With LEDs sources the story was long about energy efficiency, but when history is written it will be about photometrics and form factor. LEDs enable all new experiences in light,” said Maury Wright, Editor-in-Chief of LEDs Magazine. “Our Sapphire Awards winners exemplify that eventuality with innovation that is simply amazing relative to products from one year ago.”
“All LEDVANCE employees can be proud of the fact that we are innovators in the lighting industry with first-to-market smart products that provide beautiful high quality light,” said Aaron Ganick, global head of Smart Business, LEDVANCE. “I couldn’t agree with Maury Wright more. LEDs enable all kinds of new experiences using light, and we are demonstrating that with the world’s first ever smart filament LED bulb. This is a form factor that has rapidly been growing in popularity, and we felt it was only natural to develop one that includes easy to use controllability. This award is a result of our more than a century of lighting experience and our global team’s constant spirit of innovation and drive to never stop asking how we can advance light.”
The HomeKit-enabled SYLVANIA SMART+ Soft White A19 Filament LED Light Bulb (MSRP $31.99) combines the future of the Smart Home with the retro look of the past and is available for pre order for Spring 2018 delivery on Amazon.com. The award-winning product is part of a robust first-of-its-kind portfolio of assorted smart light bulbs and strips that can be easily controlled directly using Bluetooth® via Siri® and Apple’s® Home app and doesn’t require buying a separate hub or smart socket, or need a Wi-Fi router to function like other products.
One of the benefits of HomeKit-enabled SYLVANIA SMART+ Bluetooth products is how easy they are to install. After screwing in the Bluetooth-enabled bulb in your lamp or attaching the strip under cabinets or behind a TV, sync it with the Home app and start controlling your lights instantly. You can use the Home app or via voice commands with Siri to easily control the lights individually or in groups as part of scenes. For those times when you are away from your Smart Home, Apartment or Dorm Room, Apple has also made it possible to control HomeKit-enabled products like SYLVANIA SMART+ lighting using an Apple TV®, iPad® or HomePod® as a home hub. With a home hub, you can set up schedules to turn lights on and off while you’re on vacation or for when you get home in the evening.
88 companies working across the LED and solid-state lighting sectors nominated over 100 products to be considered for the fourth annual Sapphire Awards, along with outstanding individuals or teams for the prestigious Illumineer of the Year award. Sapphire Awards judges ultimately considered products across 20 technology categories that covered the spectrum of lighting applications from new categories such as Horticultural Lighting and Smart and Connected SSL Technologies, to classic applications such as LED Drivers and Industrial SSL Luminaire Design. New this year, the judges also considered submissions in project categories for both SSL smart Lighting and SSL outdoor lighting, and a humanitarian award was announced. During the Gala, the best of the best took home the Sapphire trophies after the late-night celebration.
