Conference and meeting rooms play host to a wide variety of visual tasks or activities. There are typically two main lighting scenarios in play:

  • Illumination that supports effective interpersonal communication.

  • Illumination that supports effective transfer of information to individuals or groups by a presenter using a variety of audiovisual media systems.

​In this setting, flexibility is the key. Often, two or more lighting systems will be used, functioning independently or in harmony with one another to create “lighting scenarios” depending on the activity or task. 


Design Tips: ​

  • The general lighting system must be controllable by digital dimming or switching to provide a variety of illuminance levels. e.g. conferences versus audiovisual presentations.

  • A controlled down lighting system provides low level illumination for face-to-face dialogue or note taking during audiovisual presentations.

  • A controlled lighting system for the perimeter walls of the room provides safe traffic flow during AV presentations and illumination of wall mounted graphics and presentation materials.

  • If videoconferencing will take place in the space, illuminance levels and color balance must be adequate for good facial recognition and rendition. Today’s videoconferencing cameras are designed to perform well under much lower light levels than studio cameras.
